Trekking Samaria gorge (Crete)
Trekking Samaria gorge is a unique and fascinating experience for both novice and expert hikers. The gorge is located in the island of Crete and has been characterised as a national park since 1962. Reaching Samaria gorge might not be as easy as walking to the local convenient store, but it is definitely worth making the effort.
Trekking Samaria gorge is an activity that takes visitors about 6 to 7 hours to complete, as they are required to walk a distance of 15 Km. The staring point of this strenuous trek is Omalos plateau, where hikers usually arrive by bus, while the end of this marvelous adventure is the village of Sfakia (in the South coast of Crete). As soon as hikers reach the village of Sfakia, they can catch the local bus back to the city of Chania.
Samaria gorge is also known for a special specie of goat that lives in the area, called “kri-kri”. “Kri-kri” is a unique specie of goat, which can be found only in Crete.
